As backward as it may sound, the worst purpose that an event like a pre-season Rookie Tournament may serve is it’s ability to let observers form opinions. While it’s great to see your prospects in action, splitting 120-180 minutes of hockey between trying to learn the tendencies of a couple of dozen players doesn’t leave you with enough time to create an informed opinion, and more importantly, a player having an abnormally good or bad night will completely throw off the expectations of someone who is watching them for the first time. The Mailbag: August 28th 

We’re rapidly approaching the end of summer, with rookie tournaments right around the corner and the full-roster equivalents not far away from following. It’s got its positives and negatives; getting a breather and some time to digest the past season was useful, but it’ll be good to get back to the game in short order.

Personally speaking, expect an uptick in work from me once we flip into September; I should probably get back to work in a way that isn’t super casual. In the meantime, though, we’ll keep it slow and steady for the next few days; though the mailbag, of course, remains constant.
